Fatal Naperville Motorcycle Accidents Spark Need for Safety Discussion

Naperville Motorcycle AccidentsNaperville has seen numerous motorcycle fatalities in just the last two years. These incidents serve as a constant reminder of the need for safety awareness and education to make the roads safer for everyone. A motorcyclist’s life can change or end in the blink of an eye, such as in the case of a 28 year old Lisle man who suddenly lost control of his bike in July of 2014 at the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Columbia Street. He was transported to Naperville’s Edward Hospital where he later died of his injuries. Naperville police members were not sure as to the exact cause of the accident.

Less than a month later, on August 8, 2014, a 14 year old Naperville girl was killed in an accident when riding with her father. The father lost control of his bike on I-55 and ran into the median. The daughter, Ashley Wilson, was declared dead at the scene while her father survived with minor injuries. He was operating the motorcycle without a valid license and without insurance at the time of the accident.

Earlier this year, on July 6, 2015, two Naperville residents had a brush with death when an SUV suddenly veered at them from the oncoming lane. One of the motorcyclists was able to dump his bike and get out of the path of the oncoming vehicle while the other was run over. The driver of the SUV attempted to run over the two cyclists a second time before fleeing the accident, but was later arrested on charges of aggravated driving while under the influence, improper lane usage, driving with a suspended license, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured vehicle. The injured motorcyclist suffered a fractured pelvis in three locations and was flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital with critical injuries.

Injuries Suffered in Motorcycle Accidents

Our Naperville motorcycle injury lawyers have noticed that motorcycle injuries are often far more severe than those suffered in most other types of auto accidents. The amount of protection that a motorcyclist has is extremely limited and he or she is likely to suffer critical injuries when facing a car, SUV or large truck. Following are only some of the common injuries that victims suffer during motorcycle accidents.

  • Puncture wounds and lacerations. These wounds are not only an immediate danger, but can result in further complications. If debris enters the wounds, they can become infected and deep cuts may damage muscle tissue and nerves. Victims may lose sensation or mobility due to nerve damage, since nerves are unable to heal in the same manner that muscles or skin can.
  • Broken bones. The force of colliding with another vehicle or landing on the pavement can result in the breaking or shattering of bone. Treatment for these injuries varies depending on the location and type of fracture.
  • Road rash. Defined as friction burns suffered when the skin comes in contact with the ground, these injuries can vary in severity. In the most severe cases, the victim can suffer from deep wounds or lose the skin on the affected area, requiring a skin graft. These injuries are also highly prone to infection.
  • Traumatic brain injuries. Trauma to the head can result in debilitating injuries to the brain that impact the victim’s ability to remember events, understand speech or communicate effectively, maintain motor control and more.
